Remodeling with aging-in-place improvements in mind
Posted on Wednesday, February 29, 2012

As much as you may not want to think about it, if you're in middle age and are approaching a bathroom remodeling project, it may be best to install a few bathroom accessories that can facilitate aging in place. Additionally, you never know when you'll have an elderly family member coming to visit, so this could save you hundreds in renovations down the road, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

If you're going to be replacing your toilet, be sure to look into models that are both energy-efficient and sit at a comfortable height. This can make transferring to and from a wheelchair far easier and you can appoint your bathroom with a new water-saving design.

Consider installing a few grab bars on the walls around your toilet and inside your shower stall. This can make it far easier for elderly family members to step in and out of your bathtub, and you should also look into an anti-slip surface for the bottom of the shower stall to reduce the risk of falls and serious injuries.

These improvements can spare you further renovations down the road and an instantly make your bathroom ready for any family member who may need a bit of extra help. What aging-in-place improvements do you have for bathroom remodelers?
